Winters and Summers

 There are winter people and there are summer people. I like the Monsoons.. just kidding. 

Generally, I hate cold weather. Maybe because I spent my early life in Hot Andhra Pradesh (now Telangana), with hardly any winter.

But I now see the bright side of winters (!), having survived horrible weather- humidity in Kolkata and a mix of many things in Delhi. Winter brings solace to tortured souls from those horrible times.. even if some extreme lows test your soul.

The U.S. of course had snowy winters too, but indoors, the heaters took care of it. Only the bills rocketed.

The only road accidents I had in the U.S. were because of ice on the road. One was bad, but we survived! And the car was rented, so it was OK..

Sweating through the Summer is now fairly OK, if it's a dry season.

Global Citizens

 My wife and I have lived in multiple places, and visited a few countries.. more than twenty, I am guessing. So some reflections about the places, though we are not particularly attached to any place.

Bangalore- great weather, great filter coffee, and many old friends.

Lucknow- good memories, professional and personal, bad weather, great kababs and biryani

Hyderabad- Great biryani, Irani chai, friends and some relatives too.

Delhi- bad weather, good metro service, bad traffic, good friends, positive attitude

Mumbai- bad traffic, efficient train service, professional workers, friends galore

Pune- Bad traffic, good bakarwadi from Chitale, great cultural scene, lots of relatives

Kolkata- Bad weather, good food, new friends who are nice, Chai addas, celebrations with gusto

USA- Some good friends, no domestic help, good National Parks, roads, no railways or autos..

Vietnam- Friendly people, no English, Ha Long Bay is world class

Cambodia- Cheap, Historic, nice buildings

Sri Lanka- Green, beautiful, good beaches, people

Greece- Chaotic, friendly, historic, Sea is amazing, islands too. Good food- Moussaka is my favourite

Amsterdam- Fun place with unique features

Rome, Venice- Good for long walks, bad traffic, Gondola ride like a Shikara in Dal Lake..

Meeting Tharoor- The Week Ed Conclave

 Not exactly, but I heard him live. If you want an example of how good English (and good looks) can take you far, he is that example. Came on time too, give or take a few.. rare among his ilk.

Why I Like Dilliwasis

These are residents of Delhi, who may or may not have grown up there. Some have. 

They tend to have a gung ho attitude towards everything. It's not easy to live in a place that has only 2 months of good weather on average. And deal with invaders at one time, and uncouth drivers today. Road rage is a real thing there, just like in L.A.

But most people in Delhi NCR that I know are nice.. maybe it's me. But online and offline, I have encountered nice people 95% of the time. That's a good percentage, in my view. So anytime I visit, I am able to catch up with a couple of friends.

 What makes a meeting or outing memorable? Could be many things, but an important thing is the warmth, among those meeting up. Or going out. Some instances I remember warmly, in pics-

Memories That Stay

 Saw this pic again, from December 2013 when I was leaving Delhi for Indore. What's remarkable about this farewell, was that our Prof. Dr. J.D. Singh joined us at this club. Along with classmates, Himanshu Manglik, Pradip Acharya, Harish Chaudhary and Sunil Gupta. Anil Shrivastava too. Some memories stay with you! Dr. Singh taught us marketing at IIMB, but remained a friend forever.. he is in Canada now, but in touch through Linkedin!

Rains begin in Kolkata

 Is it the monsoon? Too soon to tell. It's still the last week of May. But since hot weather began in mid-February, it's likely the rains will also come earlier than usual. It rained today, quite a lot, and the clouds seem set for a longer stay.

It's already rained heavily in Bangalore, Delhi and Pune (last 3 days). And Goa. Monsoon is officially in Kerala too, as per Met dept.

So, chances are that we are into an early monsoon. That may be good news for the rain-parched areas, if the rains get there. 

Meeting Annie and AJ

 There were a few good friends we had at Greenwood, South Carolina, USA. Annie and Samrendra Singh were a couple we grew fond of in the two years we spent there. Samren was a colleague at Lander College where I taught, though in a different department. We hung around with them and sons Eric and AJ quite a bit, enjoying a few drinks and the company.

We left in 1991, to return to India. Since then, Samren passed away a year ago or so, and the kids were grown up. It was thus great to see both Annie Singh and AJ at Delhi last week. Just like we had met yesterday! Here are some pics!

Forts I Saw

 India has so many forts, and I have seen a few impressive ones, including Fort-palaces which were like cities once. One in France was Mont St. Michael, in Northern France-Brittany- along similar lines. The ones in the U.S. were unimpressive, and small.

Jaisalmer and Jodhpur are probably among the impressive ones I remember, along with Jaipur's Amber Fort. Golconda is also nice to visit.

Others would be Sinhagad near Pune, and one in Kolhapur that I forget the name of. Bekal Fort on the West Coast of India was good too. Have seen the Agra Fort and Delhi's Red Fort and Purana Qila (ruins, mostly) also.

I only saw Solapur's fort and Gingee Fort in Tamilnadu from a distance. While passing by on road trips.

I think Milind Gunaji has written a book about Maharashtra's Forts too. Should read it some day.

Where we Met

Starting with students from IMT. 

This is on the suggestion from Abha, whom I met at Nagpur, then Mumbai a couple of times, and Delhi, more recently, with Shalini Sinha. Nikita, I first met when she was Nikita Kumar, in Pune. Later, she moved to Hyderabad, and we met with her friend from Symbi, Ritika Sharma. Most recently, we caught up in Delhi. Meghna Sinha I first met in Delhi at a Starbucks, then at Yauwatcha, in BKC. Also met Meghana Joshi at The Good Wife, BKC with a couple of others. Vikas and Varun were there too. Garima Shah at Hiranandani, Mumbai, in The Yellow Chilli.

In some other meetings, Tosha and Abha were together, or Sirisha Adi and Anuj too, in Mumbai- Grandmama's Cafe was one. Sheetal Garg and I met mostly at Mumbai, and once in a large alumni meet where we sang a duet from Johnny Mera Naam! Ananya Nandi De at NOIDA, her place, and Delhi. Shraddha Nigdikar, at her place in Dadar, in Vashi and at Mulund at a friend's place. 

Abhinav Kamal, the digital marketer and film maker, I met in Bangalore, and in Mumbai after IMT Nagpur. I think Shuchi Bhatnagar was at a Hyderabad alumni meet. Divya Singh, first at Mumbai, where she also guest lectured in my class on Digital Marketing, then at Pune and more recently, Gurgaon. Harshad Lunavat and Meghana Khadilkar, at Pune. Target is to meet Karishma too, there. Anupriya Pandit, at Bangalore. Surbhi Mehta Chadha at Delhi. Also her neighbour Vrinda Khanna at her place in Delhi. Pallavi in Bangalore, Shafique in Bangalore and Indore recently. Kanika Mhendiratta in Delhi, twice, Swati Jain in Mumbai on a rainy evening. Khyati Jha, in Navi Mumbai.

In Ahmedabad, a whole gang of IMT students, led by Ishan, Ankita, Keyur and separately, Manjari two or three times. Also Punyashlok Dwibedy, who was at IIMA doing his Ph.D.

Anshita Abhishek Chetty organised two get-togethers for me to meet IMTans, and we met. In Bangalore, with Sreeram and Gowri, Rupam Verma, Ishita and Anurag with their kid, and Anshita's hubby Abhishek and their twins, Anusha Mamidanna and hubby Aashish were also part of the meets. Meenu Mynam, I met in Bangalore. Kedar Muley and gang at Thane -Ravi Mittal was part of that.

KIAMS students, everywhere- Smita in Dubai, Sudeshna and Sid Agarwal in Kolkata (and Delhi airport), Vidya TC and Swapna Gurijala at Singapore- twice. Nishka and Vikram in Mumbai, Rajiv Roy Chowdhury at Bangalore (his wife turned out to be from PESIT). Aditi Sood in Kolkata, Savitha, multiple times in Bangalore. Also Nidhi Kanungo in Indore a couple of times, but also in Lucknow, where her hubby is from. Jagdish Subramony, in Chennai, long ago. Jimmy in Bangalore, Mukesh in Kodaikanal. Also Navroze Sethna in Kodai, his hometown, Anupama at Bangalore, Padmapriya at Hyderabad and Delhi, Jogeswari in Hyderabad and Thailand (with her company Golftripz), apart from Calicut and Nagpur where she gave a guest lecture and shot a video. Sunil Kataria at Delhi along with Sharmishtha Singh. Nikhil Damle I met in Mumbai long ago, and Bangalore later. Anushka Mishra, at various bookstores on Church Street and also at 13th floor, MG Road. Zargar Basharat in Bangalore. Dheeraj Mohan in Chennai.

PESIT students I have met mostly in Bangalore, like Pooja Varun, and Aishwarya Omprakash with her hubby and kid. IFIM students too- Chaithu Gunapali, Bharath Shenoy, and Nagendra Shenoy. At an airport, I met Shreya Sengupta from PESIT_IUP.

Shatakshi Tripathi, Varun  and Shailaja Gupta from the IIM Indore (Mumbai campus) at Bangalore. And Pratima Gaikwad of the same program, only at Hyderabad- 3 or 4 times! 

Anusha Soni, IIM Indore student, and Neha Adiga, in Pune. Sapna Patni, Anam Nuhi and Harshad Sachani at Indore- him at Nagpur too! Bhuvneet Raheja, In Delhi.

Meeting Alums

 In this case, turned out to be alums of two kinds- students and faculty- from IMT Nagpur, which I left in 2013. That hasn't mattered, coz the alums are warm and welcoming, even today. Applies to some faculty alums too.

The pic below has both- students Abha Kulkarni and Shalini Sinha, from around 15-16, and Harsh Halve, who was a faculty member and Placement Chair there. We had a great time, in spite of the high decibel levels trying to prevent us from talking! Mrs. Deepshri Halve, a personal friend, was there too. We also remembered other alums, like Kanika Mhendiratta, Nikita Ray, Ananya Nandi De and Sheetal Garg.

Work Travels in Delhi and Maharashtra

 We had a rather hectic week, first at an admission fair in Pragati Maidan, Delhi. We met a few prospective students and counseled them to apply to Prestige University, for an MBA or 5 year IMP. That's a BBA plus MBA.

Then, we met a few corporates, among whom was Ms. Silky Mittal of Nestle, who is on our advisory board. 

That's her, in the pic above. She's a Category Head in Foods. Was in charge of Digital Marketing/E commerce earlier. An alum of IIM Calcutta. We also met some alums of Jaipuria, NOIDA, where my Dean worked earlier and Prof. JD Singh had been the founding director. JD Singh was our Marketing prof. at IIMB. We then moved to Pune, and met Barclays HR team at Kharadi, and visited a couple of Agricultural colleges in Nagar and Nashik. More on these later.

IDA Revisited

 IDA is a think-tank that again invited me this year to a meeting of Higher Ed leaders to discuss policy issues in higher education in India. There were many VCs from universities across the country.

 Met two IMT alums for a fun evening. Abha and I have met a few times in Mumbai too. Ananya, I met a year ago at her place. This time, both made it to CP.
