38 Together and Going

Our anniversary is coming up on 26th.. it's number 38. Tough to remember all the ups and downs we went through, first couple of years in the U.S. and then the rest in India, with a few trips to Sri Lanka, cambodia and Vietnam thrown in. A Eurail tour on the way back took us to Greece, Italy and France, Netherlands etc. We went to a friend's place in Brittany, near the Northern coast where Mt. St. Michael is located.

Made friends in the U.S., Ron and Carmon Green, Leslie and Bob, the Sonis, and Athena and her family, Annie and Samrendra Singh and their sons, and a few more. Wilma Reeves and a Filipino faculty, Ceferina Hess, for example.

We also had a group of Indian friends, Alok, Anil, Suresh and my brother Satish hung out together. Alok's wife Pam too. We went to Charleston, Gatlinburg, L.A.  and Las Vegas, plus a few National parks like Grand Canyon, Petrified Forest and so on. Visited Kiran Kenjale and Neena in L.A. and Prakash and Meena, in Detroit.

Made a few friends in our long stay in India at multiple places- Bani and BK Mohanty in Bhubaneswar, Bhagyalakshmi and Shweta Kushal at IIM Indore, Smita Dabholkar and Gadgil at IMT Nagpur, Vijayakumar and family, Dhanapal and family and Yashad Gaur, in Harihar, Anjula Gurtoo in Lucknow, and Shraddha and Neeraj in IIMK. Also Ravi and Dipi in Calicut. We also have musical friends from a group on FB.

We have a wide social circle that includes her schoolmates and students from when she taught (Vaseem), and mine from IIMB, Osmania and all the places I taught in, like IIM Indore (Sanjana Rao, Anusha Soni, Pratima Gaekwad) and IMT, (Ishita Modi, Garima Shah). Keeps us occupied. Plus all the Plays and concerts that we are able to attend in Pune regularly. Life is a party, when you have the right company, right?

My NMIMS Years (2020-2022)

My NMIMS Years (2020-2022) at Bangalore as Director

This could be the next chapter in my autobiography. This was a unique adventure that I shall remember for a lot of things. One, meeting Rajiv Krishnan, a schoolmate who now lives in Bangalore, after I left school in 1977… that makes it 43 years! And he looked almost the same as he did back then. He’s a H.R. honcho from XLRI, and worked at Korn Ferry. Another schoolmate, Atul Bhatia who had worked in Cadbury now Mondelez), gave a guest lecture online to our MBA students.

The students at NMIMS were missing, because I joined during COVID times. Late 2020. Since March, the dance of the Corona pandemic was on. So my interview itself was online, and I joined a position that a former colleague Vinay, had occupied earlier- he was with me at IIM Lucknow.

I used the time I had to get to know the faculty and administration guys better, and the students, subsequently. We conducted an online Convocation- the first to do so in the NMIMS community- sometime in early 2021. We had to do another one for the 2021 batch later that year, and only the 2022 Convocation could be done in person. Divya Anand and Sreelekha helped with the second, and Manuja Seth (who’s from Shivpuri, M.P.), managed the first online Convo as the M.C. Brilliantly, I should add. Rakshita was one of the M.C.s for the physical Convo held at Satya Sai hall, next to Forum Mall.

Above- Manuja Seth.

Below- Rakshita is in the centre. She was in the placement team and was also the M.C. at the convocation held later.

Faculty were the first to come back, and I found they were a hard-working lot. We did a couple of FDPs with them, on Research methods and Teaching Excellence. I also guest lectured in a few MBA classes and BBA and B.Sc. Analytics/Statistics classes. Found the students to be very bright, and diverse- they came from all over India through an entrance test. Bangalore was their second choice, after Mumbai, usually.

I got a taste of centralized decision-making, as many of the policy decisions were taken out of Mumbai, which cramped my style a bit. I am a votary of autonomy to the branches. The management had different ideas.

The students, I first met online, and then, in person, with the exception of the placement team, which was in Bangalore throughout the pandemic. We also had a party to celebrate the successful closure of the 2021 batch placements! Ekalavya, the placement head, was the brain behind that happening, and the team really performed!

One of the first students I met online before the inauguration was Mahek Singhal.

Later on, we met in person too, including at a Golf session during inauguration for the next batch. Above and below, in the photos, is Mahek.

A report-below- on how we oriented students in the first couple of days, including my session on personal branding and another on Golf!

NMIMS Bengaluru Campus introduces personal branding (and Golf) at the 13th MBA batch orientation program

Bengaluru, 9 June 2022: SVKM’s Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS) Bengaluru Campus has introduced a first-of-its-kind session on ‘Personal Branding’ for students at the Orientation Program organized on the occasion of the 13th batch MBA course starting here today.

A session was dedicated to ‘Personal Branding’ under the title of “The Brand Called You” and discussed the ways in which MBAs can build students’ build their own brands while studying at NMIMS Bengaluru Campus for use in the job market. Building a brand is a marketing technique to fetch premiums over other candidates in the professional career. Learning these techniques will help students showcase their interpersonal skills that not many students are able to do.

Personal brand building encourages students to develop extra-curricular activities, participate in competitions, and engage with the concerned faculty in class and outside. Ms Aditi Ashok is a great example of a big personal brand to emulate, from another field. She is a Golf player who has represented India at the Olympics in Golf.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Rajendra Nargundkar, Director, NMIMS, Bengaluru Campus, said, “Every student needs to gear his personal branding to the target audience, maybe the first employer after MBA, and subsequently use these techniques in his career as he grows, adding more features to the brand image. So, it is important to start on the right footing which will help him brand for future in whichever field he opts for.”

The Chief Guest on the occasion was Mr Abhijit Sharma, Vice President, Data Labs, Landmark Group. Mr. Sharma said, “Prioritizing is what you will learn in the next two years. Be clear with where you want to go-make this your primary principle of prioritization. The best part of an MBA is having an opportunity to experience everything together and learn from each other, helping others in every way you can. Institutes have a certain character that comes from its stakeholders. One of the most critical pointers to note is the identity.”

A session on the second day of the Orientation Program will be dedicated to introducing students to Golf, a game popular amongst corporates and useful for networking with them.

 Meeting Old Alumni

Met a lot of alumni from various institutes, including IIM Indore (Shatakshi and Varun), KIAMS (Savitha, Nikhil Damle), and IMT (Anshita, Ishita, Anurag, Gowri, Sreeram, Anusha M. and Aashish, Rupam), IFIM (Chaithu), PES (Pooja Varun)…

The IMT Nagpur group, courtesy Anshita Abhishek Chetty, met at Orchid hotel, Koramangala, for lunch one afternoon. The big pic-

The next photograph is of Shatakshi and Varun, both alums of IIM Indore whom I never taught, but we met online and became good friends.

Shailaja Gupta Kapoor, who I did teach, started a big alumni group in Bangalore, that consists of alumni from all IIMs. I happened to attend the first couple of meets. They started small, but have expanded since. I met Nupur Prasmit of IIMK there, and happened to attend her wedding reception later (in 2023) after I moved to Indore!

Of course, one of the first alums I met was Savitha of batch 1 of KIAMS. She works for a Finnish Telecom firm, but she was with Deccan Herald when we met first. Also, she used to live right next to the NMIMS Koramangala campus earlier. We met a few times in my two years there. Once on the 13th floor on MG Road, and at other times, on lower floors.

A pic from our first meeting, below.

Craft Beer

Bangalore has been a pioneer in the Internet Cafe and IT Mindset, and everything tech. But also in craft beer. I remember some visits to Biere Club, one of the first place in the Vittal Mallya Road area. Went there a few times with Avinash Mulky and other friends.

Toit, in Indiranagar was just starting up when I went there with students, Sunny, Jimmy, and Mukesh of KIAMS. Now we have a TOIT in Pune too.

Bangalore now has several pubs and craft beer places, in JP Nagar too. Bramha Brews is one large place. Others are also quite popular.

The good thing about craft beer is that it is fresh, taste includes various flavours, and includes both light and dark varieties. I am not a big beer drinker, but craft beer is an exception.

In Kolkata too, I tried two or three places, in Park Street (Roman theme) and Galleria mall.

Golf Training

I played Golf starting from my days at Kirloskar Institute of Advanced Management Studies in Harihar, around 1996. My colleagues Dhanapal and Vijayakumar, and YK Gaur, were my partners. Occasionally, got to play in Bangalore with friends- Ravi at BGC, or Muthu at KGA. But in later years, I found opportunities to start training students and faculty in playing Golf, when I was at IMT Nagpur. We actually created a Green and played in the evenings, and trained our students and colleagues.

At IIM Indore, I used the cricket ground to play a few shots, and trained some students and faculty in the basics. Also a few MDP participants from various companies.

At NMIMS Bangalore just after the COVID pandemic, we started playing on a green patch in campus, and many faculty or staff picked up the basic drive and Putt. It was great fun and the institute bought a kit subsequently.

I think schools or institutions should, where they have some space, try and teach this unique sport - it's not very expensive to do just a couple of shots and some putting. And the bragging rights for students are priceless!

Forays Down South

Like the Maratha rulers did, we went to a Southern foray, covering Bangalore, Coimbatore and Calicut, in April 2026, to celebrate my retirement..

Did meet a few friends, and stayed with a couple. Mostly by train, except one bus journey from Coimbatore to Palakkad, in a non-AC bus. The Vande Bharat from Bangalore Cant to Coimbatore is very convenient. I used to do this by bus earlier.

Some books I read at Ravi's place, Calicut

He's a biker too..
Jayasimha and Manoharan at the Deck by Sherlock, MG Rad.

Calicut.

From the train, Bangalore- Coimbatore.

Bangalore Visit 2026 Jan

One of two achievements- met my grandkid from an adopted daughter- Shatakshi Tripathi. She opened her eyes to make eye contact too! One of the cutest kids ever! Bonus, I met my fb friend and Shatakshi's mother- for the first time. And her dad. Varun, Shatakshi and Katyayani, the new kid on the block, below.

Achievement 2. Stayed with Rimjhim and Dheeraj at their place in doddabommasandra near BEL, Vidyaranyapura area. Also looked at the surrounding areas including a lake, GKVK in the Agricultural University premises, and a couple of eateries. Tripti Thindi was one, I think.
Milind Chalisgaonkar and wife Anjali came over one of the days. They are in L and T Raintree, not far away. (in pic below)

On a walk by the lake..selfie training helped!

Also went to the Bengaluru Habba and watched Kaushiki Chakraborty perform along with Shatanu Moitra. The venue was a former jail, and this is what the Watch Tower looks like (behind me and Rimjhim)

Kaushiki on stage (above)

Achievement 3. Met Manoharan and Pandu Naik, former colleagues at IFIM/PESIT.
Manoharan also did his Ph.D. with my guidance at VTU. (pic below- Church Street)

Anniversary Number 37

Sounds like a lot, doesn't it?

Started in Pune, continued to a stay in the U.S. till we returned to India in 1991. Then, we went places within India. Bhubaneswar, Hyderabad, Harihar, Lucknow, Kozhikode aka Calicut, and on to Bangalore, Nagpur, Indore. Then, back to Bangalore and a second stint in Indore. Possible last stop is now Kolkata, for work.

Two daughters came along the way, and both are now grown-up young ladies with minds of their own. We are growing old and heading towards a sunset, but it has been an enjoyable time on the whole. Whether to marry is a personal choice that you have to make. If you do marry, you will more likely than not have kids, and take care of elders in either family at some point. Also make friends, and keep some.

It's an Endurance Test of a kind too, as there will be ups and downs of various types. But through it all, you have an assurance that you are not alone. That is a comforting thought, and makes it worthwhile. Just my view..

Rains begin in Kolkata

Is it the monsoon? Too soon to tell. It's still the last week of May. But since hot weather began in mid-February, it's likely the rains will also come earlier than usual. It rained today, quite a lot, and the clouds seem set for a longer stay.

It's already rained heavily in Bangalore, Delhi and Pune (last 3 days). And Goa. Monsoon is officially in Kerala too, as per Met dept.

So, chances are that we are into an early monsoon. That may be good news for the rain-parched areas, if the rains get there.

Microbreweries

Not sure which year it was, but I was visiting Bangalore from Harihar, and reconnected with Jimmy and a couple of alumni.

We decided to go out to a pub, and TOIT was the choice. They had set up a microbrewery onsite, probably the first or second in Bangalore. I didn't know what it was at the time. Later, I went to a few more, including the Biere Club on Vittal Mallya Road with Avinash Mulky, and Ann Arbor near Garuda Mall. Last one was Big Brewsky near WIPRO, on Sarjapur Road. No, actually Church Street got a new one where I met Milind Chalisgaonkar. I think it's called Klang. Another one on Residency Road called Communiti.

In Pune, the Corinthian Club had Doolally, which is now called The First Brew. TOIT has also come here, along with a couple more. Update- another visit to TOIT Pune, after we finished teaching at Lexicon..

Meeting Old Friends

This time, it was a colleague of my wife's, and her husband. They had taught in a school in Bangalore, many years ago. He worked at Bosch, and is retired. We went to their place for a delhicious lunch! It was actually in Gurgaon, but that's almost Delhi. We escaped from Delhi before the pollution levels hit the record levels that it is famous for.

Mr. Ramesh and Mrs. Madhu Mathur, who hosted us at home for lunch.

Conversational Abilities

Some people have the ability to speak about any subject, for unlimited amounts of time. Think politicians.. no, just kidding, I am not into those. Just normal people.

My own conversational abilities depend on the other person I am in conversation with. Usually, I like small numbers of people, not a very large group to converse with. And probably one or two others is best, Maybe three.

I have had meetings with ex-colleagues- ones, twos most of the time. Students, usually former students- again, I have met them individually or in a small group. And had a lot to talk about, and listen to. Some of them I met for the first time outside class, and found them to be great conversationalists. Empathetic, knowledgeable and generally, agreeable personalities I would like to meet again. Anam Nuhi was one such, at Indore.

I can recall quite a few that I have had fun times talking with- more recently, Harshad, Meghana at Pune- earlier, Divya Singh at Pune and Mumbai, Nikita Kumar at Pune first, Hyderabad later, and then at Gurgaon with Shruti and Aditya, Tosha Dubey at Mumbai, Abha with her and Sirisha, Anuj too in Mumbai, and recently at Delhi, Sunil Kataria and Sharmishtha at Delhi, Surbhi Mehta and hubby at Delhi, Vrinda Khanna at her place (Delhi), Pallavi and hubby in Bangalore, and with Shafique (I had my first Sangria there), Pragya Singh (Kahwa?) at Pune, Anupriya Pandit at IIMI and at Bangalore, Dheeraj at Chennai, Meghna Sinha in Delhi and Mumbai (BKC). Meghana Joshi in BKC too. At THE GOOD WIFE, no less, with Vikas and Varun!

I have also gone book shopping with Nishka in Mumbai and Anushka in Bangalore- both KIAMS students. Sheetal Garg is the gregarious one, and musically minded too, and we have talked a lot. Ishita and Anurag, are from Indore, and Anshita too, though we (along with Rupam, Gowri and Sreeram, Ishita, Anurag too) met in Bangalore thanks to her. Meenu Mynam, I met after long at Bangalore.

Savitha (from KIAMS 1998-2000) and I are thick pals now, and so are Shatakshi and hubby. Vidya and Swapna I met in Singapore twice and had a great time.  Smita, in Dubai, and we went stargazing too!

Swati Jain, of the Curly Hair fame, and I had a great time meeting on a rainy evening in Juhu. And Anusha Soni and I met up in Pune after the Golf course at IIM Indore! She's my pal from Bhopal! Nikhil Damle (KIAMS) and I had a long chat at NMIMS Blr. And Chaithu Gunapali of IFIM, and Pooja Varun from PESIT.

And my Biryani friend Pratima deserves a special mention! We keep meeting in Hyderabad. Shailaja Gupta Kapoor actually started a group for IIM alums that's doing fabulously well, and I met them a few times in Bangalore. Through the group, met Nupur Prasmit whose wedding reception was last week in Indore! Also an Indori from KIAMS, Nidhi Kanungo, met me at IIM campus a few years ago.. she advised me to get onto Instagram, and I did..now!

More recently, met Ananya Nandi De at NOIDA too, along with her hubby and son. Had a great time! Here's to more such conversations, planned or impromptu.

Review of Jan-April 2023

This is a four-monthly review of 2023- the first four months. There was action, reunions, plans made and some fructified.

Prestige University -my new workplace- saw construction gathering pace, towards start of a new batch of MBA and Integrated Programs. Our new registrar joined, and another couple of team members too, in the non-teaching side. We also had an outing to Jalgaon, where we strategised for the Prestige group-includes the older institutions, and industry - soya bean related. The resort at Jain Agro was a great place, with a Gandhi exhibit, and lots of Mango plantations.

Went to IIM Kozhikode  as a Chief Guest of the Calicut Management Association annual convention. It was a great trip, and I got to meet many new people from different fields. And visit the beautiful campus too, where I taught earlier from 2003-2005.

Also was invited for a keynote speech at NIFT Gandhinagar, and met a few of their students doing Masters too. Made friends with a couple (Mehak, Dhanali, Sneha), who are as bright as any I have encountered anywhere else. Met Manjari Mundanad, my old friend and Ph.D. student at Nirma, now a prof. at Adani. Know her from IMT Nagpur days.

More recently, made a trip to Bangalore for Good Friday, and met Shatakshi, Savitha and Muthu. Had some Burmese food thanks to Savitha, for the first time.. it was awesome. Also met Meghana Khadilkar in Pune for the first ever time.. yet to meet her daughters and hubby. Soon, maybe.

Shafique Gajdhar (ex-IMT N) visited and met up. Also met a few Ph.D. students from IIM Indore, now friends of mine, a couple of times. None of the new ones were from Marketing area, funnily! Also saw a play starring a couple of them in February- called Knives Out!

Sloganeering

Elections are back, in a few states. My former state of residence, Karnataka, very soon, and my current state of residence, Madhya Pradesh, a few months later. So I thought I would coin a few slogans for anyone who might use them. I would claim royalty, please remember..

Sev your pals, from Indore and Bhopal. Vote XYZ.

Ee saala IPL cup hamara hai. Vote for ABC

You got free swimming pools earlier. Now we promise you diving boards.. in Bangalore.

The Metro will be built, including the Bannerghatta Road stretch, the new MG road station, the airport connection..we just don't know when..

We will develop M.P. and make it the Export hub, the I.T. hub, the Food Processing Hub, and the eating-out hub.. no spokes will be allowed!

Belgaon will become Belshahar, one of the most developed cities. If you vote ABCD.

Dharwad will compete with Harvard.

Karnataka - Part 3- NMIMS and More

I had another innings in Bangalore from 2020 end till October 2022. This was as Director at NMIMS Bangalore campus. Eventful 2 years, which started with online classes due to COVID still being around. Slowly, we started offline classes, and I was able to meet many students in person. We had a lot of good times, a couple of Convocations, etc. and a few Golf sessions too- in our backyard.
