Catchup Meetings

Met Adithya Padala, a classmate from school, who counts Sabeer Bhatia among his friends. He is a lso an active member of TiE, The Indus Entrepreneurs, and lives in the Sonoma county which produces wine. He also has a vineyard that produces Chardonnay grapes. I learnt he went to USC (South Carolina) for his MBA in 1983. I was at Clemson, SC a bit later for a Ph.D. Small world..

His wife Tulasi, who clicked the pic below.. right, above. Prarthana and Anu are on the left.

He was visiting Pune, so we caught up at Blue Diamond, the Taj hotel which was once owned by the Kirloskar group.

Great conversations, about school and family, and plans for the future. In short, everything under the Sun.. 2024 is still alive with possibilities, including Golf..

Delightful Drinks

I have been experimenting with drinks all my life. In Calicut, my friend Ravi and I tried out innovative cocktails with local ingredients. Here's a recent pic with him in Bangalore. (Jan. 2022)

Anyway, here are a few recent trials. From red wine to Tequila, many types ...

A favourite red, not expensive either. By Fratelli, Solapur.

Medicine for a cold day, above, and legendary stuff, below..

A special one named after a new-born nephew, Khayal, sent by his parents.

A favourite Single Malt.
Of course, Amrut -Peated is a current favourite malt made in India. I like the peated ones with the charcoal flavour, maybe coz I grew up in the Andhra Coal-mining belt.

Twinning Programs

There was some talk about turning Varanasi into Kyoto. Before that, a few years ago, there had been some talk about turning Mumbai into Shanghai. So I propose that there be a twinning program just as we have in education. Twin cities need not be just Secunderabad and Hyderabad. They can span the globe, based on the number of twins- sorry, the similarities between them-according to the beholder.

Here's my list of twins-almost identical-

Nashik and Burgundy. Both produce wine.

Detroit and Chennai. Car producing towns with water bodies nearby. One of them is bankrupt.

Tokyo and Gurgaon. Both produce Japanese cars.

Nagpur and Miami. Orange country.

Mumbai and New York. Both produce enough garbage to light up the city if recycled.

Omaha and Rajnandgaon. Both in the middle of nowhere. The latter is famous on Vividh Bharati for song requests.

Hyderabad and New Jersey- approx. the same number of software engineers, from Andhra.

London and Delhi. Both have a defunct Queen.

Oxford, which will soon vie for the tag of Pune of the East, and Pune.

Edinburgh and Hubli, known for no.1 Scotch and no.2 IMFL, respectively.

Party Week

No, I have not joined the BJP, Congress, JD (A, B, C,..U) or any other political party. Nor am I planning to. I am just another aam aadmi and will continue to be. What I am referring to is the mundane act of having a party.

For various reasons (like having important guests) we had through the week, and a colleague throwing one, I had a hectic week of lunches and dinners being thrown (by or at me) and attended. All in all, a satisfying bunch of them, exploring different cuisines from the ridiculous to the sublime.

Also got a chance to educate the waiters of various establishments in town about some wines that they had in stock-wines are tough to keep track of, and I don't blame them. There are literally thousands of wines, made in dozens of countries. Since one guest was a wine aficionado, the waiter ended up learning a lot. Grape names like Merlot, Shiraz, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, etc. will now flow off his tongue like the Ganga flowing all over Uttarakhand this past sunmmer.

Anyway, now there is some respite, and that is also welcome, after all the hecticness (this may not be a word at all). It continues to rain in Nagpur, much more than it usually does.

Dave Barry- Greatest Hits

Barry has defined a sense of humor as "a measurement of the extent to which we realize that we are trapped in a world almost totally devoid of reason. Laughter is how we express the anxiety we feel at this knowledge." His comedy is awesome, and I present a few nuggets from the book Greatest Hits which I am presently reading. ROFL-LMAO humor (I am humouring him with the American spelling of the word).

On making Your Own Beer

Yeast is a wonderful little plant or animal that, despite the fact that it has only one cell, has figured out how to convert sugar to alcohol. This was a far greater accomplishment than anything we can attribute to giant complex multi-celled organisms such as, for example, the Secretary of Transportation.

On Wine

A sommelier is a wine steward, the dignified person who comes up to you at expensive restaurants, hands you the wine list, and says "Excellent choice, sir," when you point to French writing that, translated, says, "Sales Tax Included."

On Wine Snobbery (He is a beer man)

...the slosh-and-sniff approach, where you don't so much DRINK the wine as you frown and then make a thoughtful remark about it as you might make about a job applicant ("I find it ambitious, but somewhat strident.." Or: "It's lucid, yes, but almost Episcopalian in its predictability.").

Laffer Curve (famous in Economics)

What the Laffer curve allegedly showed, when you held it in a certain light, was that if the government reduced everybody's taxes, it would make more money, and the federal budget deficit would go away. I admit that, looking back, this theory sounds even stupider than throwing beverages into Boston Harbour, (the tea party) but, at the time, it had a very strong appeal.

Yuppies (referring to their ambition from childhood onwards)

What bothers me about the yuppies is, they are destroying the normal social order, which is that people are supposed to start out as wild-eyed radicals, and then gradually, over time, develop gum disease and become conservatives.

Blogging in a Cab

Blogging in a cab is a unique experience. So is drinking wine from Chile. Thanks to a French guest we were entertaining, had the wine yesterday. Today, I am in Bangalore for a PhD student's defense, and tried blogging on the cab. It works, apparently. Whether its quality improves, is yet to be tested and proved. Hope to have some good dosas and kaapi while I am here, as a Dilliwala  visiting Electronic City-literally, as the PhD presentation is at IFIM in electronic city.

Bangalore is at 23 degrees, and heavenly after a rainless Delhi. The flight (Indigo) was only half-full  (Even though Kingfisher has pretty much closed shop), and therefore pleasant. More on the stay later.

I Want to Start a War
