Virtual and Real Meets

 The last three months at NMIMS Bangalore has been a flurry of activity, and meetings, mostly virtual, with students who are members of various activity clubs and committees. Some virtual events too, with industry participants. For a change, we did a small event to felicitate the Rank-holders and Medal winners of the 2020 graduating batch. Though a bit late, at least it was in person, and it was great to see some students in person. Earlier, there was a meet over dinner with senior Placecom members.

Portraits of Batchmates- 9

Sardie

The academic heavyweight who was in a hurry. You might hear of people talking nineteen to the dozen, but you'll only hear Sardie talking thirty-eight to the dozen. The hurry was evident at Placement too (he was the first to be placed at Summer and Final Placements). A time-pauss character whose ambition was to find enough cloth of the same material for a suit. Meanwhile, he subsists on one made from five different bales. Therefore a regular customer (Institutional Buyer?) at wholesale cloth dealers.

Dunhill

He was the ultimate in independent opinions. Carried freedom of expression to mean disagreement with everyone on every topic. A budding bureaucrat, (THE I.A.S), he believes in viewing everything from the socio, the economic and the political perspectives - for the total macro-view. He moved heaven and earth to get us the Idiot-box before the 1982 Delhi Asiad, and thus bears the onus of turning us into ......... (Note: Aamir Khan must have used this knowledge to title his film which was shot in our campus). His penchant: Discovering lacunae in THE SYSTEM a day before every major exam.

Meeting Old Friends

I have realised that I have a major hobby. That is to talk about old times. I guess all old guys have this one. But there is a twist in the tale. I like to talk about old times with new people. And I have a huge stock of people with whom I can talk. That includes my 3000-odd students from around 9 places I have been in. The most recent ex-students are from IMT Nagpur/Ghaziabad.

So it was when I met Nikita at Pune. She is from IMT Nagpur, and now working. It was great catching up on old times, with of course, new perspective. She had been in the student placecom (committee) and that was one thing to talk about. Because this was the first time that IMT achieved record placements. It took years of effort, but it paid off. Nice to learn such things.

There was a lot of other gossip too, which will remain undisclosed, but it was great fun catching up. I recently met with lots of alumni at Bangalore too (Madhulika, Abhinav, Anupriya and Gowri-Sreeram from IMT and Sowmyashree from PESIT). And those meetings also produced a lot of good feelings.
