Cause and Effect

Usually, an effect is the result of many causes, acting independently. But we simplify matters by attributing a single cause to an effect. The world is generally multivariate, or has multiple forces acting simultaneously.

Sometimes, two or more things have to happen simultaneously to produce an effect that we notice. As an example from films, Hindi films, the fact that Rajesh Khanna acted out songs sung by Kishore Kumar in a film called Aradhana (composer SD Burman) benefited both immensely, and each became a superstar in his domain. Both had some success individually, more so Kishore Kumar when he sang for Dev Anand earlier in the sixties, but the success multiplied manifold when he teamed up with Rajesh Khanna in a string of superhit songs. Dev Anand had equal success with songs sung by Mohammad Rafi and Kishore Kumar over his lifetime in films. Sometimes, like in Guide, both sang for him.

Rishi Kapoor initially had Shailendra Singh singing for him in his debut and a few subsequent films, but the songs he performed in films where Kishore Kumar sang for him (Khel Khel Mein, Hum Kisise Kam Nahi, Karz, were some) took him to dizzying heights of popularity. The music in this case was by RD Burman for the first two and Laxmikant Pyarelal for the third-they also played a role.

Just a couple of examples to show that many variables -acting together (interaction effect) or independently-may result in a particular effect.

Lonavala Wax Museum

Completely done by a gentleman called Sunil, this wax museum is remarkable, and worth a look if you are in Lonavala. Quite a decent collection of international and national figures of repute. Some of my favourites were there. Pics might speak louder than words, so here goes...

Rafiology or Songs by Rafi

Though I am a bigger fan of Kishore Kumar, there are some superb songs sung by Mohammad Rafi that I like a lot. A sample-

1. Nazar na lag jaye kisi ki rahon mein.

2. Gulabi ankhen jo teri dekhi

3. Bekhudi mein sanam

4. Nisultana re pyar ka mausam aaya

5. O haseena zulfonwali jane jahaan

6. O mere shahe khuba o meri jane jhanaana

7. Main kahin kavi na ban jaun tere pyar mein ae Kavita

8. Baharon ki baraat aa gayi..

9. Jiya o jiya o jiya kuchh bol do..

10. Main zindagi ka saath nibhaata chala gaya..

Live Concerts

I have been to a few- Shankar Mahadevan, Sudesh Bhosle, Hridaynath Mangeshkar, Manna Dey, Kishore Kumar-RD Burman-Asha Bhosle, Pandit Ravishankar, Pankaj Udhas (aka Punk Rock of India- just a joke), Shiv Kumar Sharma, Hariprasad Chaurasia, Ghulam Ali+Mehdi Hasan, and a couple of them dedicated to people no more- SD Burman, and Mohammed Rafi, for instance.

I enjoyed all of them, because hearing music live, specially from the artist himself, is a different feeling, and he/she brings some story about the music or songs to the event.

Kishore Kumar Memorial in Khandwa

 A bust of the singer..
The sign on the road in Hindi..(below).
On his birth and death anniversaries each year, a commemorative event is hosted by the M.P. government here.

One of my favourite singers is Kishore Kumar. I have been a fan since I first heard him sing the songs of Aradhana and Kati Patang, and of course countless other films before and after these. This blog is named after a line from his Yeh shaam mastaani.. so it was a great pleasure to visit his Memorial at  Khandwa recently, in the company of my brother and a long-time friend Anil. These are some pics from there- some more follow.

SD Burman, who gave him his style, and unique songs to sing- Dil aaj shaayar hai, and Phoolon ke rang se are just two examples. (above left)..
Below, a memorable role in Padosan, left, and with Rajesh Khanna on the right. Middle, with Lata Mangeshkar..again, many memorable songs..I particularly like the Aandhi duets.

RD Burman, with whom he had many of his hits, and Mohammed Rafi, an equally talented contemporary..below, right to left.

Something I am pretty kicked about accomplishing!

Nonsensical Words in Song Lyrics

Yahoo, chahe koi mujhe Junglee kahe.. has one.

Aiyyayya karoon main kya, suku suku..seems like another one. Both Shammi Kpoor/Rafi songs.

Edlari odlari ohoo, in Zindagi ek safar hai suhana (the yodeling part) is a third. Kishore Kumar song.

Biri biri biri..meri jaan maine kaha, meri jaan tune suna, dil ne dil se kya kaha? Good question.

Oooooh, Mehbooba, mehbooba..an RD Burman song again.

Ek chatur naar has a couple in the middle of the duet/fight. om bram, aa ee oo a ai...etc.. adding to the fun quotient in a fun movie.

Eena meena deeka is full of them.

Favourite Songs

Hindi film songs- a list of favourites.

Yeh dil na hota bechara, kadam na hote awara

Dil aaj shaayar hai gham aaj naghma hai

Hai apna dil to awara, na jaane kis pe aayega

Hey, maine kasam li, hey, tune kasam li, nahin honge judaa hum..

Chala jaata hoon kisiki dhun mein.

O mere dil ke chain.

Tum kitni khoobsoorat ho yeh mere dil se poochho.

Tum mile pyar se mujhe jeena gawara hua.

Zindagi ke safar mein guzar jate hain jo makaam, woh phir nahin aate

Aap ki aankhon mein kuch mehke hue se khwab hain

Khwab ho tum ya koi haqeeqat..

Are yaar meri tum bhi ho gazab ghoonghat to zara odho.

Ek pal ka jeena phir to hai jaana.

Aanewala pal jaanewala hai..

Kai baar yun bhi dekha hai yeh jo man ki seema rekha hai

Seene mein jalan aankhon mein toofan sa kyun hai, is sheher mein har shakhs pareshan sa kyun hai.

Kehna hai, kehna hai, aaj tumse yeh pehli baar

Gore rang pe na itna guman kar, gora rang do din mein dhal jayega

Meri neendon mein tum mere khwabon mein tum

Hum the woh thi aur smaa rangeen samajh gaye na..

Meri pyari Bindu..

O mere Raaja, khafa na hona, der se aayi..

Wahan kaun hai tera musafir jayega kahan.

Mehbooba, mehbooba,

Lakhon hain yahan dilwale aur pyar nahin milta

Kuch na kaho, kuch bhi na kaho..

O  haseena zulfonwali jaane jahan..

Jawani janeman haseen dilruba

Parde mein rehne do parda na uthao

Dilruba, aa meri bahon mein aa..

Mohammad Rafi for Shammi Kapoor

Mohammad Rafi was one of our greatest singers. He sang for several heroes over the years. I particularly liked the joy he brought to his Shammi Kapoor songs. Shammi had this somewhat manic energy in his movements, and Rafi's singing brought that out very well. Here is a listing of some of them.

Film Bramhachari- This is a duet which gets your feet tapping automatically. Aaj kal tere mere pyar ke charche har zubaan par sabko malum hai aur sabko khabar ho gayi..the music adds to the charm.

Badan pe sitare lapete hue ..o jaane tamanna kidhar ja rahi ho..zara paas aao to chain aa jaye..he sings to Vyjayantimala in Prince..a memorable song.

Yahoo..chahe koi mujhe junglee kahe, kehne do ji kehta rahe..was a superb song in the film Junglee.

Film Teesri Manzil. Unforgettable songs from him like O haseena zulfonwali jaane jahan, and Aaja aaja main hoon pya tera, allah allah inkaar tera.. matching steps with Helen in the first, and Asha Parekh in the second.

Aji aisa mauka phir kahan milega..aao tumko dikhlata hoon Paris ki ek rangeen shaam dekho dekho dekho dekho dekho An Evening in Paris, was my first introduction to Paris.

Jaane wale zara hoshiar yahan ke hum hain Rajkumar from the film called Rajkumar.

Baar baar dekho hazaar baar dekho, dekhne ki cheez hai hamara dilruba..in Chinatown was another great foot-tapping energetic number.
