Fun With Brexit

Not sure if anybody takes the former Colonial Boss seriously anymore. But here's a small further attempt at not taking them seriously- Brexit jokes, in other words. Or more accurately, jokes that are inspired by the word Brexit.

What are these?

Cakexit..no, it's leaving a room which has an excess of cake. That day is not far, we are at December 23rd, right now.

Teaxit..taking down the truly English drink. Refusing a tete-a-tete over tea, in other words.

Coffexit- similar to the above, additionally proving that a lot does not happen over coffee, putting that advertising line in the CAN.

White Housexit- Throwing tantrums that force new inhabitants to evict you from the White House.

Sexit- Taking anything inherently dull, and performing some plastic surgery to enhance parts of it.

Textit- this is not a joke, it's asking someone to send you a text. As in SMS or Messenger.

Bullshit..it's nothing to do with the U.K, -it's found all over the world..universal xxx.

Film Review- The Sense of an Ending

Absorbing, almost lyrical, though not as satisfying as the book.

Having read the book a while ago, I had forgotten the twist. A good thing when you are watching a human interest story with a very big twist. But I remember I was impressed with the book, and had even recommended it to many. By the way, Julian Barnes wrote another one that was about dying, which is worth dying for.

The movie is worth a watch if you either liked Lunchbox (same direcor here) or like Julian Barnes's writing. The director does a good job, keeping the atmosphere of an English Public School, and the countryside (where much of the action happens) authentic. The sequences involving the protagonist and his schoolmates ended too quickly, I thought, and the ones with his daughter were a bit prolonged (because they don't take his story forward). But these minor cribs apart, it's beautifully acted.

Please don't go in expecting a Guardians of the Galaxy, and you won't be disappointed. The book, as it usually happens, is even better due to the detailing.

Impending Vacation

I like my vocation because it entitles you to a vacation, against the norms of corporate behaviour, where anything other than value-added stuff contributing to the bottom line (wonder why it's at the bottom) is frowned upon.

So this animal called a vacation seems to be drawing close, with some prospects of Golf with friends being a part of it. There is a planned trip to Munnar to play and sip some signature tea, I hope. I stayed in Kerala for two years but never got around to going there.

While on the subject, I started playing some Golf on our own cricket ground in IIM Indore today. I intend to train colleagues if any are interested in the game, and maybe students if the numbers are manageable. The ground is large enogh to do some shots with a medium distance iron, and that can give you a good feel for it, and make you feel good that you know some of the great game. Trust the Scots to invent all the highfalutin stuff! They must have been itching to be different from the boring Brits!

Punjab Da Puttar

Continuing my serial encounters with regional heavyweights.

I met a hatta-katta Punjabi the other day. I asked him where he was going.
“Kanaada,” was the reply.
“Why do you guys like Canada so much?” was my innocent question.
“Bekaas Trronto is a great place, yaar” he said.

“But why?” I persisted.
“It’s a ‘player’ to stay there. Good climate, nice people, clean surroundings. Not like Delhi.”
“But if everyone goes to Canada, won’t it become like Delhi?” I was inquisitive, and persistent.
“Oye, main parathe wali dukaan thode hi kholoonga udhar (do you think I’ll open a paratha shop there?)”
“Nahin, nahin, paaji, my matlab was not like that,” I apologized. “I just wanted to know ki why you all don’t want to live in our country.”

“Simpal, yaar. We are still thinking like the British. Commonwealth country with only a few wealthy people. We have mobiles, but nothing to eat. Aston Martin is used to reduce the population, only. Election=inflation is a mathematical reality. We are losing our ‘chracter’ and the aam aadmi (common man) can’t afford an aam (mango).”
I said, “Paaji, you are right. But we have some national treasures like the three Khans, The Big Boss among them, and Kapil Sharma. How can you compare Canada with us?”

He said, “Trronto chal tujhe dikhaata hoon”  (Come to Toronto, I’ll show you). On that note, we parted amicably.
