Fun With Alums- At Home

Got a surprise visit from two IPM alums who were in my Marketing Research class too- Amogh Jawa and Vanshika Chaudhary- she's on to a Ph.D. in Eco. now and he works for Caratlane.

They came with old friend Shweta Kushal, prof. at IIM I. We joined IIM at the same time, and are 'batchmates' therefore!

We had great fun, cooking, eating and drinking.. and singing. Vanshika is a great singer, and also plays the guitar! She also trains people in taking better selfies. I need to enroll. But she did teach Amogh a thing or two- he's progressing well!

Plays- Watching and Acting

Watching and acting in plays are two entirely different things. I have watched fewer plays than movies, but realise how difficult it is to stage one. That is because of acting in one during my MBA days- my only foray into this arena. Also because I watched my friend Shweta Kushal direct from scratch a new set of actors-students, in 4 different plays at IIM Indore over the last few years.

I have watched a couple of English plays, and a few Marathi plays. Maybe one or two Hindi plays, Have been impressed by most of these. Marathi stage has a long history, and a couple of classics were remade recently into films by enthusiastic directors. Natasamraat and Katyaar Kaaljaat Ghusli were both very good in the new medium.

Watching Naseeruddin Shah and Ratna Pathak Shah in Bangalore last year was a rare pleasure. So was Arundhati Naag performing a Girish Karnad play a few years earlier. Shabana Azmi was in the audience for that one!

Maybe after I retire, will try and watch a few more. Bucket list, here I come!

Knives Out- A Play

Views of my blog have been 776668 till date. So I trust I have some regular (loyal?) readers, and some who browse and stop by.. so I want to share an experience of a live play performed by IIM Indore students starring some friends, and superbly directed by another friend Shweta Kushal. Knives Out, adapted from a film of the same name, was staged on Feb. 17th. Some of the excitement is captured in these pics-

Some of the cast including Prachi and Aakansh.

The private detective and the policemen.

The immigrant nurse with the detective

Other important characters - members of the family

Aakansh looking old- older than me, he joked.

Some more caught in the act!

The audience is important too.. Pratishtha and Neeti behind us- Sohni with me.

Before it all began.. Sleeping Beauty Prachi and a part of the set- well designed.

All in all, a great show!

Friends Through Golf and IIM Indore

Golf has given me a lot of new friends- teaching it, I mean. One of these I taught on request, was a talented actor from IIM Indore FPM program, Prachi Jain. She also brought in Akansh, another young actor who'd also acted with her in a play directed by Shweta Kushal- The Merchant of Venice, in Feb 2020. Through her, I got to meet and make friends with a few more Ph.D. students. These will all be stars of the academic firmament soon. Some pics from a recent get-together where we got to eat some good food, accompanied by banter- both very tasty :)

Stage Performances by IIM Indore Students

Thanks to my former colleague Shweta Kushal from IIM Indore, I witnessed another stage production, that of Oscar Wilde's Lady Windermere's Fan. This was part of a course on Management Learnings from Theatre that she offers to the 5-year program _IPM-students. Brilliantly produced by the students, and performed. Oscar Wilde was the baadshah of one-liners, and this play has plenty of those.. great fun to revisit.

Some glimpses-

The Merchant of Venice Comes to Indore

The canals and mansions of Venice came alive, through the unusual love story of Bassanio and Portia, and a couple of other couples, at the IIM Indore auditorium last evening. A brilliantly assembled ensemble cast performed the Bard's immortal play to perfection. Shylock, the Jew, contrasted well with the generous Antonio and his gentleman friend Bassanio.

Some of the cast was changed to female characters in this adaptation, to good effect. The Duchess of Venice (Kiara), for instance, replaced the Duke, and Lancelot, the servant who switches jobs from Shylock to serve Bassanio, was also played by a female, and quite effectively portrayed by Prachi. Students from the IPM, PGP and FPM came together to play all the roles. Shreya Surana played Portia like a veteran.

The major characters- Shylock, Portia, Antonio and Bassanio, and the supporting characters- friends of these two, the Princes of Morocco and Bombay (a change from the original), and the lady in waiting, and others, were just right for their roles. The set design, lighting and sound added to the impact, not to mention the wardrobe/dresses which made the women look beautiful, and the men elegant. It was a hat-trick of sorts for Shweta Kushal, the director, who earlier directed Where There is a Will, and The Importance of Being earnest at IIM Indore. Some glimpses of the play-

An Age to Die?

What's an appropriate age to die? Maybe there's one for each one. A healthy human could live to be 100, or 90 plus. Some have, like...
