Mumtaz and Her Films

 Her early films were probably forgettable, though she started pretty early. Acted as a heroine opposite Dara Singh in a few films too, but really came into her own when she starred opposite Shammi Kapoor in Bramhachari, where she had a great song- Aaj kal tere mere pyar ke charche kar zabaan par. It was om everybody's zabaan, for a long time. Also, another song in that period, Zindagi ittefaq hai, opposite Dharmendra and Feroz Khan was very popular.

Ater she teamed up with Rajesh Khanna, the pair had quite a few successful outings. Like Aap ki Kasam, Roti and Do Raaste. The song Bindiya chamkegi was a huge hit. Dushman also. 

And with Dev Anand, she starred in hare Rama Hare Krishna, the film in which Zeenat Aman made her debut as the hero's sister. 

Khilona opposite Sanjeev Kumar was another great role. 

I also liked her in Apradh, made by Feroz Khan, where she had two good duets, Tum mile pyar se, and Hamaare siwa, tumhaare aur kitne deewane hain? 

From Roti, her duet Gore rang pe na itna gumaan kar, ..main shama hoon tu hai parwaana, was memorable.

Jeetendra was another hero she teamed up with successfully, in a couple of hit films. Himmat was one of them.

The Early Khans of 70s Bollywood

 I remember Feroz and Sanjay Khan from my early days at the movies, much before Shah Rukh and others came along. Aamir was playing a kid in Yaadon ki Baraat then. 

Sanjay Khan was definitely the handsome one, and starred in quite a few unremarkable movies. Dus Lakh, Babul Ki Galiyaan, Mela, Dhadkan and Dhund were some of these, and I mostly remember nothing of these. But he was tolerable as an actor.

Feroz was the stylish one, and in later years, he made his own films and starred in them. They had him playing larger than life roles, like Dharmatma or Qurbani. I haven't seen Jaanbaaz, but I can guess how it would have been, based on past films of his. Qurbani became famous for introducing Nazia Hasan to Indian films. The Disco Deewane girl sang Aap jaisa koi meri zindagi mein aaye, to baat ban jaaye (under Biddu's music I think), and became a rage. Laila main laila by Kanchan was also a big hit.

Last I remember seeing Feroz was in Welcome, a crime caper.

Of course, there was Amjad Khan and his wonderful debut in Sholay in 1975.

Feroz Khan- Our Own Cowboy

Feroz Khan was a handsome Pathan who gave us some stylish films. And some good songs. Apradh, from the seventies, had car-racing as its background, and some good songs. Two of them that I still remember, are

Tum mile, pyar se, mujhe jeena gawara hua..

Hamare siwa, tumhare aur kitne diwaane hain.

In the film Dharmatma too, there were some good numbers like

Tere chehre mein woh jadoo hai, bin dor khinchaa jaata hoon..

Kya khoob lagti ho, badi sundar dikhti ho, with the expected response from the lady...phir se kaho, kehte raho, achcha lagta hai.

Tumne kisise kabhi pyar kiya hai..

Qurbani also had some path-breaking songs such as Laila main laila, and Aap jaisa koi meri zindagi mein aaye, which introduced Nazia Hasan (singer) and Biddu, the music composer, to us.
