For some reason, each department does their own celebration- making it tough for me to attend all. Anyway, what I saw at the Law and Computer Science depts. was good. Creative impersonation of faculty - many of them, and dances and songs were the highlights. One shayari performance too. We enjoyed it. Pics-

What I Learnt From Hindi Films
Life is song and dance- if you don't appreciate these, you have not lived (Osho has said much the same thing somewhere).
Good music can take you through bad times..try it. Zindagi ek safar hai suhaana..
Happy endings are possible
(particularly with good editing, because then you decide the ending).
The cops cannot solve all your problems- you have to make an effort too. Same with God!
Looking good can make you feel good..even others looking good on screen, when you know they have used make-up.
Philosophy is easier to disseminate through a well-made film, than through other means- zindagi badi honi chahiye, lambi nahin, babu moshaay! (film Anand, circa 1970).
Corollary to the above- through good songs as well. Zindagi ke safar mein guzar jaate hain jo makaam, woh phir nahin aate, or Aanewala pal, jaanewala hai, ho sake to isme zindagi guzaro, pal jo yeh jaanewala hai. Or, Zindagi ittefaq hai (from Aadmi aur Insaan)

Hindi Film Dance Numbers
Choreography in Hindi films is very different from that in Western films, where different dance forms are used. We have dances steeped in our tradition, including classical, but also other forms adapted for Bollywood. Western forms have also been used by many music composers, with good results. Here is a list of some of my favourite dance numbers from Bollywood, starting with one of the latest.
- From Bajirao Mastani, the high-energy dance by Ranveer playing Bajirao..Malhari.
- Muqabla, muqabla,..Laila..from Humse Hai Muqabla, which I saw in its Telugu version titled Premikudu. AR Rehman's music is awesome, so is the dancing by Prabhu Deva.
- O haseena zulfonwali..from Teesri Manzil. Shammi Kapoor, Helen and RD Burman.
- Aaj kal tere mere pyar ke charche har zabaan par..again, Shammi, with Mumtaz this time. Bramhachari was the film.
- Rishi Kapoor in Bachna aye haseeno lo main aagaya..in Hum Kisise Kam Nahin.
- Lekar hum deewana dil, from Yadon ki Baraat..Tariq and Neetu Singh.
- She is very pretty, from the film Priya. Tanuja with Jalal Agha.
- Main sitaron ka tarana , from Chalti ka Naam Gaadi. Madhubala and Kishore Kumar
- Hum the woh thi aur samaa rangeen samajh gaye na..from Chalti ka Naam gaadi..Kishore Kumar with Mohan Choti and Anoop Kumar.
- Jaane-jaan, ..nisha from sanam Teri Kasam, with Kamalahasan and Reena Roy.
- Mauja hi Mauja from Jab We Met..Shahid and Kareena Kapoor.
- Jaan pehchaan ho, jeena aasaan ho..from Gumnaam.
- Hum kale hain to kya hua dilwale hain.. Mehmood and Helen, again in Gumnaam.
- Mera naam chin-chin choo..from Howrah Bridge.
- Ek pal ka jeena from Kaho na Pya Hai..Hrithik Roshan, Lucky Ali's voice.
- Duniya haseenon ka mela..from Gupt, with Bobby Deol.
- Jeena bhi kya hai jeena..Mithun with Salma Agha, one of his best dance numbers..in Kasam Paida Karne Wale Ki.
- Tu mujhe jaan se bhi pyara hai..from Wardaat, Mithun and Kalpana Iyer.
- Mast baharon ka main aashiq main jo chahe yaar karoon..Jeetendra in Farz.,,and
- One of my all time favourites, Shola jo bhadke dil mera dhadke with an endearing pair- Geeta Bali and Bhagwan dada...here is the link if you haven't seen this cute number. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FkXVfGi7QVg
Chupke Se
Some nice songs using using the word Chupke.
Koi chupke se aake, sapne dikhake, mujhko jagake bole, main aa raha hoon...kaun aaye yeh main kaise jaanoo...a wonderful song by Geeta Dutt, from Anubhav.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tR-2xq6q5KA
Chupke chupke raat din ..the classic Ghulam Ali rendition of this ghazal is so good, you can listen to it every day.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lNA9qb8IHZA
Chupke se dil dede nahi te shor mach jayega...a duet sung by Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar, from Maryada, an old Hindi film starring Rajesh Khanna.

Sawan- Songs of Rain
Rain plays an important part in our lives- and in movies. The term most used by lyricists to describe the rainy season is Sawan. In tune with the season (rains have begun in Nagpur), some songs that use the word-
Rimjhim gire sawan, one of the most popular, from the film Manzil.
Sawan ka mahina, pavan kare sor, an old hit from Milan, I believe.
Badra, hai.....aaya sawan jhoom ke, from the film Aaya Sawan Jhoom Ke, starring Dharmendra and Asha Parekh from the sixties.
Sawan ko aane do, was also a film by Rajshree Productions that had a title song with these words..if I remember this right, Arun Govil (played Ram later in the serial Ramayan) was the hero of this film.

'I' tem Number
The good old club song, or cabaret as it was known in earlier times, has undergone a name change. It is now an item number. While pondering over all epoch-making, world-changing, earth-shaking things that I have ever come across, I pondered over the possible reasons for this change of nomenclature.
My pet theory about it (to be debated in appropriate forums, no doubt), is that we are now past the X, Y and even the Z generation. In other words, we don't know what's happening around us any more, though we are loathe to admit it.
However, even in this sea of ignorance, there is a swathe of brilliance cutting across. Which is, that the only important thing left in the world for each one of us, is the 'I'. Therefore, the 'I'tem number, signifying to the performer of this delightful number, that it is she alone who matters. Not the lustily cheering crowds in front of whom she merrily gyrates, nor the professional dancers (Helen, for instance), whom the new breed like her has displaced.
This gives me a new 'i'dea, sirji. Maybe we can name the new generation the 'I' generation.
