Weekly Roundup

I had a visitor and had a great time partying. This came just after my outing with the dirty dozen-marketing area colleagues.

April fools' day passed by without my looking any more foolish than I do on other days year-round, so it was not a bad one. This reminded me of Hyderabad where the local paper, Deccan Chronicle, used to pull a fast one each year on this Day. Enjoyable stuff, and good-humoured.

Teaching for the academic year has come to a close, and we had also finished with the Convocation, so more time for rumination- and grading, of course. Look forward to eating more of mangoes that will soon be in season, and see if that beats the heat.

Golf is currently not happening, but that does not mean I can't post Golf pics, right? Here is one from the Air Force Golf Club at Nagpur, where I am preparing to take a drive. Prof. Gadgil is with me.

Fools' Day

I like Fools' Day the best of all "Days" celebrated globally.

It is one where we shed our pretences- of being smart, intelligent, holier-than-thou, and all the rest.

It is an opportunity to prove to others what they may not always believe. You know what.

It is a day dedicated to humour, unlike too many days when you have to be serious. Seriously, why is it that we don't take laughter seriously? Heart disease would vanish in a jiffy! Imagine Bush, Osama, and so on on a laughing trip. You can't make war when you laugh.

Fools can sometimes be useful. They are the ones who cling to their ideas, and innovate when no one believes in the. You might say we need fools to keep improving things, inventing things.

Now that I have made my case, I will not prolong my argument foolishly, and stop right here.

Happy Foolishness, whichever day you choose it as your companion.

April Fool's Day

We used to pull quite a few juvenile tricks on our friends when we were kids to 'celebrate' April first. I am not sure whose idea this Fool's Day was, but I like the idea of a day for being non-serious. Lighten up, chill, or whatever way you express it, it's good for everyone not to be sanctimonious, preachy, deadly serious, for a change. After all, most people would have realised the hard way that you are not going to be changing the world anytime soon. Heck, you can't even change your kid (after he grows out of his diapers) or your wife/husband.

All the gurus in the world have been pleading that we should look within, and change ourselves, that the cause of all the world's problems lies within us. The theory of internal locus of control supports this view. One of the major things that needs changing is that we are too serious all the time. Particularly the older guys, but not only them.

So no more serious stuff today. Have some fun. Even if you have to act like a fool. Sing, dance, listen to music, watch a fun film. Whatever. Happy April Fool's Day.
